Record level of employees launching tribunal claims
The number of claims accepted by Employment Tribunals around Britain has rocketed by 56% in the past year, according to figures released by the Tribunal Service.
As a possible after effect of an ever lingering recession, the number of claims accepted by Employment Tribunals between 2009 and 2010 reached a record 236,1000, up from 151,000 the previous year.
Of those claims filed, the number of redundancy-related issues saw the biggest increase, from 10,800 in 2008 to 19,000, as employers looked to cull their staff expenditure.
In addition, age discrimination claims rose by 37% to 5,200 and Working Time Directive claims increased by an astonishing 297% to 95,200.
Overall, the number of disposals, those cases withdrawn, settled, dismissed, or decided at a final hearing, by Employment Tribunals increased by 22%, but more than 400,000 claims remain outstanding.
“The recession provides a likely explanation for the increase in unfair dismissal claims and redundancy claims,” employment law expert, Susie Munro, told Personnel Today. "The 56% rise in the number of claims received by the Employment Tribunals is clearly going to have an impact on how long it takes for cases to be dealt with.”
Despite the backlog, disgruntled employees are successfully using the nation's Employment Tribunals to air their grievances and challenge unprofessional employers.
However, when approaching an Employment Tribunal it's always best to have legal guidance and support, especially as there are strict time limits to adhere to.
